5 Tips for remembering to take PrEP every day.
Here are some simple ways to help you stay on your medication regimen.
- Get a pill box
You’ve all seen them at pharmacies. They usually have two compartments for each day of the week
so that you can keep tabs on your morning and evening doses. You can buy one for less than $10 on Amazon. As long as you can remember which day it is, this simple hack will work for most people. Some downsides include having to refill the pill box once a week, and possibly adding the wrong amounts of meds to each container.
- Get a smartphone app
There are several highly rated smartphone apps that help you remember to take your pills. Mango Health, MediSafe, MedHelper, MedCoach, Pill Reminder are all solid options available for both iOS and Android devices. Basically glorified alarm clocks, these apps not only nudge you to take your meds, but can also help you keep track of when to refill a prescription.
- Use a prepackaged mail-order service
Let someone else do the work. What if your pills came individually packed for each day of the week, complete with the contents of each pouch printed on the outside? That’s exactly what startup PillPack is doing. Although the service is only available in select states right now, every two weeks subscribers can get a shipment with all of their drugs, pre-sorted.
- Use a monitoring system
Try a more complete monitoring systems, such as Lively, a company that makes a small sensor that attaches to a pillbox and can monitor when people dump their pills into their hands. The device can send alert messages to patients and caregivers.
- Find a doctor who holds you accountable
According to a recent story in Forbes, the main reason we miss our medication dose is because we don’t want to take the meds, not that we forgot. For example, we may not like the side effects, or don’t want to admit that we are in fact sick. Perhaps, then, the best way to boost your chances of taking your meds is to have a doctor who can explain the seriousness of your condition, and why sticking to your medication schedule is so important, the article suggests.
